Arc’teryx Proton Hybrid Hoody Review

Arc'teryx scored a new piece 3 days ago: The Proton Hybrid Hoody.

I didn't have the chance to put my hands on it yet, but Proton Hybrid Hoody (Men's - Women's) looks like a crossover between a softshell and a synthetic insulated jacket.

If you're looking for a softshell you can wear as a standalone piece during a wide range of different high output activities (mainly climbing & snow sports) when it's not freezing, then Proton Hybrid Hoody can be a great choice for you, even better than the fantastic Proton LT (Men's - Women's).

In comparison to the amount of the insulation the Proton Hybrid Hoody has (40 gsm Coreloft), it comes with a surprisingly harder face fabric at 50D, which makes this piece a borderline hardshell.

Proton Hybrid vs LT comparison page on arcteryx.com: https://arcteryx.com/us/en/compare/X000004842-distortion/X000006731-lucent%20multiverse

It can hug a rock all day with no problems. This isn't the case with its cousin, Proton LT, which comes with 80 gsm Coreloft and only a 20D face fabric.

When compared to other loftier synthetic insulated jackets like Atom LT, Proton LT (read my comparison of the two) and Nuclei FL (read my review), this tougher face fabric can and will make the Proton Hybrid Hoody specifically useful in those areas where weather and abrasion resistance is required more than insulation; like climbing or skiing in mild weather.

As much as this new piece does look like it's going to last long, if this is going to be your first Arc'teryx piece, then you might also want to consider heading towards flagship products instead if you want something that is proven to sustain.

So, if you'd like to do that, then if Proton LT and above range is too hot for you, then I'd probably either get a Proton FL, Atom SL (read my comparison of the two) or one of those in the Gamma line (read my Gamma SL vs LT vs MX article).

If you're confused now... then maybe visit this post: Best Arc'teryx Jackets: Breakdown for each use.

Warmth

Not only does Proton Hybrid Hoody is equipped with half the insulation of the LT (40 vs 80 gsm), but it also isn't insulated in the hood either (unlike Proton LT's 60 gsm Coreloft hood).

Read more about Coreloft, Octaloft and other synthetic insulators in this post: https://outdoorcrunch.com/clo-values/

When performing high output activities, it probably will hold up to around -10 deg C on average. Or even less, if you run warm like I do.

View full table at https://outdoorcrunch.com/best-arcteryx-jacket/.

If you're confused now and don't know which jacket best corresponds to your own needs, then follow the advice given in https://arcteryx.com/us/en/shop/jacket-finder/.

The temperature ratings in this list are intended to represent the lowest temperatures you can wear each jacket without feeling uncomfortably cold.

Keep in mind that these are only approximate values, assuming:

  • worn over a shirt only and no shell over,
  • during daily use (strolls, power walks etc at most - no high output activities),
  • with light wind,
  • and when it's dry out.

These values applicable to your torso only. Your hands, legs and feet are still subject to their own additional insulation.

The best practice is usually to use this table for comparing each jacket to one another, rather than pinpointing their ratings.

Also, ratings will best respond to males. As most women tend to run colder than men, for women, shifting these ratings a bit is recommended.

Always opt for the warmer option when in doubt. For jackets with Atom AR level warmth and beyond, recommended is almost always the hooded models.

Weather & abrasion resistance

Proton Hybrid Hoody will resist wind much better than it resists water. Although 50D is serious density, waterproofing a garment is very difficult and mostly requires Gore-Tex equipment.

If a product isn't made of "Gore-Tex Pro", then chances are it's not that reliable for waterproofing.

Abrasion resistance

It's not unusual to see Gore-Tex reinforcements in high wear areas of technical jackets like this, but what I specifically like with this one is that in addition to the standard reinforcements made in shoulders and hood, Proton Hybrid Hoody is also reinforced in the upper arms and chest.

In terms of abrasion resistance, Proton Hybrid Hoody crushes most of other contenders in the same lane, as 50D face fabric should be the first thing we see in here.

It also does come with a DWR.

  • What is DWR by the way?

DWR is a coating.

It's basically sprayed on to the surface of these jackets as a finish. It stands for Durable Water Repellent - which means that water will be repelled under wet conditions instead of soaking into the fabric.

DWR also decreases dry time.

It's a good thing these jackets are coated in DWR, but pay attention to the fact that DWR is a coating - meaning that it will wear off over time.

Which is why you might want to invest in a DWR spray such as this one for after treatment.

As you see, there's a strong correlation between FP x FW and temperature ratings, but not more than, say, 80%. I explained why this happens here in this post of mine.

Features

RECCO reflector

An embedded transmitter that allows the rescue team to locate your whereabouts if/when you get lost and disappear from sight.

Pocket configuration

Comes with two hand warmer zipper pockets and one chest pocket.

Helmet compatibility

Looks like it isn't helmet compatible. This is a bit disappointing to be honest.

I know Arc'teryx advertises this jacket as a skiing product, it could have been the new go-to Arc'teryx jacket for climbing in mild temperatures, but seems like we're going to have to wait for a few revisions, at the very least.

Correction: Hmm, turns out that this jacket can be helmet compatible, after all. Description calls it out, bu the hood looks too trim to me. I'll update this article when we have more information.

Also just saw Alpine & Rock Climbing badge in the product page.

If you'd like to read further about Arc'teryx hoods, read about StormHood and DropHood here: https://outdoorcrunch.com/stormhood-vs-drophood/

Colors

People admire the Phenom/Bordeaux and Lucent/Multiverse colors instead of black color of men's counterpart and even want to see these two color ways for other Arc'teryx jackets.

Women's counterpart doesn't offer these two color ways, and instead it offers a full black and an Atmos/Habitat color.

Conclusion

If you need a rock solid, lightly insulated hoody for skiing, snowboarding, climbing and/or bouldering; then take a long look at Proton Hybrid Hoody. It really can be the piece you're looking for.

I'll revisit and edit this article once I have more information about it.
