Powder skirts: What are they and do you need one?

Last updated: December 14, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

A powder skirt is a piece of fabric or other material that is attached to the bottom of a ski jacket. It's designed to prevent snow from entering the jacket when the wearer is skiing or snowboarding in deep powder.

Powder Skirt

Powder skirt of the absolute unit Arc'teryx Rush Jacket.

The skirt is typically elasticized or otherwise fitted to the wearer's body, so that it forms a snug seal around the waist. Some powder skirts also have a clip or other mechanism to attach the skirt to the wearer's ski pants, for added security.

In general, a powder skirt is an essential piece of gear for anyone who enjoys skiing or snowboarding in deep snow.

Backcountry skiing, freeride skiing, and freestyle snowboarding are the skiing types where a powder skirt is required the most. In these types of activities, the skier or snowboarder is likely to encounter deep, unpacked snow, which can easily enter the jacket through the bottom if not properly sealed. A powder skirt can provide an effective barrier to prevent this from happening.

In addition to helping keep snow out and body heat in, powder skirts can also add an extra layer of style to a winter jacket. Powder skirts are often made from colorful and patterned fabrics, so they can add a pop of color or a unique touch to an otherwise plain jacket. Some powder skirts also have additional features, such as pockets or vents, which can be convenient for storing small items or allowing air to circulate.

How necessary is it for a powder skirt to be removable?

The necessity of a powder skirt being removable depends on the individual's needs and preferences. Some people may prefer a powder skirt that is removable because it allows them to adjust the fit of the jacket or remove the powder skirt altogether if they do not need it in a particular situation.

For example, if you are skiing or snowboarding in deep powder, a powder skirt can be very useful for keeping snow out and helping you stay warm. However, if you are just walking around town on a cold day, you may not need the extra protection of a powder skirt and may prefer to remove it.

On the other hand, some people may prefer a powder skirt that is not removable because it provides a more secure and snug fit. A non-removable powder skirt is attached to the jacket in a way that creates a tight seal around the waist, which can be effective at preventing snow from entering the jacket. In addition, a non-removable powder skirt may be less likely to shift or come loose during activities that involve a lot of movement, such as skiing or snowboarding.

What are the cons of powder skirts?

One potential downside of a powder skirt is that it can make it more difficult to use the restroom while on the slopes. This is because the skirt is designed to fit snugly around the waist, and must be removed in order to use the restroom.

This can be inconvenient, especially if the skier or snowboarder is wearing multiple layers of clothing and needs to remove multiple items in order to access the restroom.

Additionally, some people may find that a powder skirt feels restrictive or uncomfortable, or that it interferes with their ability to move freely while skiing or snowboarding. These are all potential drawbacks of a powder skirt that should be considered before deciding whether or not to use one.

Lastly, a powder skirt can add an extra layer of bulk and warmth to the skier or snowboarder's outfit. This can be especially uncomfortable in warm weather or for those who tend to get hot easily.

If you're worried about these, then as explained earlier, a removable powder skirts can be useful because they allow the skier or snowboarder to remove the skirt if they do not need it or if they want to wear their jacket in a different setting (such as around town).

Which Arc'teryx shells feature a powder skirt?

Arc’teryx ReGEAR: OutdoorCrunch exclusive promo code

Last updated: December 14, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

Arc'teryx ReGEAR takes used gear back in action: http://regear.arcteryx.com/.

They take the items traded in by users like you and me, rejuvenate them meticulously, and finally put them up for resale to allow for extended periods of use by someone else.

  • #A sidenote here: Arc'teryx's PDF guide to jackets is GOOOLLLLDDDDD. Absolutely check that out too if you're interested in buying one.

If you have an Arc'teryx gear in good condition which you no longer use, then you might want to trade it in to get a digital gift card in return (valued at 20% of the item's original list price). You can then use that amount in your next Arc'teryx purchase.

If, on the other hand, there's a bunch of Arc'teryx items you'd like to own (welcome to the club, I'll be your guide), but you can't afford them, then definitely take a look at ReGEAR. You can even shop Veilance in there, which is fantastic.

One thing to note here is that ReGEAR is currently only available in US & CA. So stop reading right here if you're based somewhere else.

Here's a pretty cool marketing video they dropped a few months ago:

The video is obviously for marketing purposes though I still think it's still pretty cool.

Purchasing a ReGEAR item

You know how they say "Quality is not an act, it is a habit"?

We all know how obsessive Arc'teryx is when it comes to quality and design - which is why we fell in love with it in the first place.

They're no different when it comes to repairing a product for ReGEAR. They meticulously inspect and repair all the items before they put them up for resale on regear.arcteryx.com.

This might sound ridiculous to you, but my personal belief is that even if Arc'teryx purposefully wanted to see their mass production systems to manufacture something of low quality without intervening them... It still wouldn't happen. Obsession on high quality output is just how all of their systems are built.

Now with all that said, despite Arc'teryx's care and attention, down jackets are still the most fragile type of jackets out there. This isn't about Arc'teryx but the jacket itself.

This is not to say you shouldn't get down jackets from ReGEAR. You can very well get them and be perfectly fine. Just make sure to do your due diligence.

Warranty and returns

As I said earlier, all items are refurbished carefully by ReGEAR. This is why they're not afraid to cover ReGEAR items with Arc’teryx Limited Warranty (source on arcteryx.com).

However, ReGEAR purchases are final and non-refundable (source at arcteryx.com). Considering for how cheap you can find the items on ReGEAR, this sounds fair to me.

View full table at https://outdoorcrunch.com/best-arcteryx-jacket/.

If you're confused now and don't know which jacket best corresponds to your own needs, then follow the advice given in https://arcteryx.com/us/en/shop/jacket-finder/.

The temperature ratings in this list are intended to represent the lowest temperatures you can wear each jacket without feeling uncomfortably cold.

Keep in mind that these are only approximate values, assuming:

  • worn over a shirt only and no shell over,
  • during daily use (strolls, power walks etc at most - no high output activities),
  • with light wind,
  • and when it's dry out.

These values applicable to your torso only. Your hands, legs and feet are still subject to their own additional insulation.

The best practice is usually to use this table for comparing each jacket to one another, rather than pinpointing their ratings.

Also, ratings will best respond to males. As most women tend to run colder than men, for women, shifting these ratings a bit is recommended.

Always opt for the warmer option when in doubt. For jackets with Atom AR level warmth and beyond, recommended is almost always the hooded models.

Trading in your used item to ReGEAR

First requirement for an item to be eligible for trade ins to ReGEAR is that it should be completely functional and in "good enough" condition.

Using your common sense should be sufficient to judge this. A rule of thumb here is that if you'd give your Arc'teryx jacket to a friend, then it's probably in well condition and it'd fit ReGEAR's standards.

Besides that, the items must also have their inner labels in good shape, and shouldn't belong to one of the categories that are excluded from ReGEAR.

These can be listed as follows:

Items accepted:

  • Gore-Tex 2L
  • Gore-Tex 3L jackets and pants
  • Non-GORE-TEX jackets
  • Insulated jackets
  • Mid-layers & Fleece
  • Pants & Shorts
  • Blended Shirts & Tops
  • Dresses & Skirts
  • Footwear (less than 2 years old)
  • Packs
  • Arc'teryx Veilance

Items not accepted:

  • Gore-Tex Paclite jackets and pants
  • Gore-Tex ShakeDry jackets
  • Any product with custom embroidery (special make-up units)
  • Cotton T-shirts
  • Pack water bladders
  • Headwear, Accessories and Gloves
  • Base layers and Underwear
  • Air bags
  • Harnesses & Climbing Gear
  • Ski boots
  • Footwear (older than 2 years old)
  • Arc'teryx LEAF

In the end, the exchange will get you 20% of the original retail value of the item you traded in, which will come to you in the form of a digital Arc'teryx gift card.

For example, Atom LT Jacket, which is originally priced at 259 USD, gets you 51.80 USD in return once traded in.

  • Here are other examples to ReGEAR trade in values of Arc'teryx Jackets: https://www.regear.arcteryx.com/trade-in

Online vs in-store trade ins

One of the good news here is that you can trade in your used jacket online or in-store.

If, however, you opt for the online option, then the total shipment cost will be deducted from your card.

In other words, you're the one who's paying for the shipment cost for online trade-ins, not Arc'teryx. The amount obviously varies depending on where you live. I, however, am told that the average shipping cost is 12 USD.

  • ReGEAR promo code: Exclusive to OutdoorCrunch readers

Until Dec 31st, use code CRUNCH25 to get 25% off the entire basket (excluding re-panelled Alpha SV's). ReGEAR is also running free shipping all month.

  • Shop ReGEAR: https://www.regear.arcteryx.com/shop/all
  • Shop ReGEAR Veilance: https://www.regear.arcteryx.com/shop/veilance

Another thing to consider for online trade ins is that if the ReGEAR team happens to turn down the item you shipped for trade in, they do not return the product back to you!

I was wondering if Virtual Advisor can step in here to help about this and provide online guidance whether the product in good condition or not before you make the shipment happen. So I asked my Arc'teryx contacts about this.

It, unfortunately, turns out that this isn't possible as the virtual advisor is available only for arcteryx.com.

As mentioned earlier into this article, even though your item confirms to all the requirements, it still must be completely functional. So make sure it indeed is in good condition.

For in-store trade ins, however, it's a different story. The staff there are able to tell you whether the product you brought is eligible for trading in or not. So, as a result, if it turns out that it's not, then you can take it back home with you.

In short, if there's an Arc'teryx store nearby, then trading in your items from there is recommended over online.

If there isn't, then you can still trade them in online perfectly fine, but make sure it conforms to requirements.

Arc’teryx Nuclei SV Review: Warmest Arc’teryx synthetic

Last updated: December 9, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

Nuclei SV (Men's) is the warmest synthetic insulated jacket in Arc'teryx's line up. It's a stunning jacket and the good news is that its women's counterpart is on its way for FW 2023.

As you can also see in this Best Arc'teryx Jackets article, Nuclei SV is one of the best Arc'teryx jackets ever.

Summary

Extremely generous insulation amount (180 + 90 gsm of Coreloft Continuous) of the Nuclei SV makes it the warmest Arc'teryx synthetic. Its ability to get stuffed into itself makes it versatile. Arato 15 face fabric is smooth to touch and makes the inner fabric is pretty comfortable to contact with the skin, although it's fragile and hence not suitable for things like climbing.

3 external (1 chest + 2 hand warmers) and 2 internal drop-in pockets are roomy and offer plenty of storage options. As if all these aren't enough, Nuclei SV also offers a two way zipper (rarely seen in Arc'teryx jackets), which offers added breathability and comfort - especially when wearing a longer jacket like Nuclei SV.

All in all, it's almost impossible to be disappointed with this stunning jacket.

Two way zipper of Nuclei SV increases comfort when you're sitting down with the jacket. Click on the image to see Nuclei SV on arcteryx.com.

Arc'teryx shines the most when it comes to synthetic insulated jackets. For down jackets, it still outperforms other brands like Rab and Mountain Equipment. But the difference there is less than the difference in synthetics.

Synthetics from Arc'teryx like Atom AR, Proton LT, Kappa, Fission SV, Nuclei FL and Dually Belay are all fantastic and you probably have never heard any bad things about any of them. Overwhelming majority of users are extremely happy with them.

Some of these jackets have gotten discontinued over time and Arc'teryx had recently brought the Nuclei SV back to life. Now it is the one that carries the flag in front. Along with Atom AR and Nuclei FL, it's the best synthetic jacket for casual use in cold/freezing damp weather.

Start with checking out the table below and find if the Nuclei SV is too warm for you. If it is too warm, then either go after the Atom AR or the Nuclei FL.

Let's dig deeper.

Warmth

Front, back and upper arms are all equipped with ample Coreloft Continuous at 180 gsm. In addition to that, the sides, hood, lower arms and underarms are reinforced with 90 gsm of it.

A single layer of 90g/m2 at underarms, lower arms, sides, and hood. And two layers for a total of 190g/m2 everywhere else (front, back, upper arms).

Weather Resistance

Like all other Arc'teryx synthetics, Nuclei SV also provides amazing weather resistance. It also comes with a DWR coating.

  • What is DWR by the way?

DWR is a coating.

It's basically sprayed on to the surface of these jackets as a finish. It stands for Durable Water Repellent - which means that water will be repelled under wet conditions instead of soaking into the fabric.

DWR also decreases dry time.

It's a good thing these jackets are coated in DWR, but pay attention to the fact that DWR is a coating - meaning that it will wear off over time.

Which is why you might want to invest in a DWR spray such as this one for after treatment.

As you see, there's a strong correlation between FP x FW and temperature ratings, but not more than, say, 80%. I explained why this happens here in this post of mine.

Durability

Probably the only area where the Nuclei SV doesn't shine. The outer fabric is tear prone but I'd highly doubt you'll experience any problems if you're planning to wear it casually.

I'd layer with a shell if I were to wear it when climbing or bouldering (e.g activities where the jacket experiences high wear).

Two way zipper

Lengthy design of Nuclei SV adds to its warmth as it covers your butt more than shorter jackets. Still, with a lengthier jacket, comfort is what you sacrifice a little bit in return.

This is because the jackets get crumpled when sitting down. It can be especially uncomfortable when driving or cycling.

Arc'teryx sidetracks this problem by adding a two way zipper. It basically allows you to keep the upper half of the jacket zipped while keeping the bottom half unzipped. As a result, the jacket doesn't get crumpled anymore as you legs don't get in the way.

Most Arc'teryx users usually complain about Arc'teryx not having enough amount of jackets with a two way zipper. This puts the Nuclei SV even more in front compared to the other models.

Other benefit of a two way zip is that it allows for mechanical venting. Mechanical venting is the most important component when it comes to the ultimate breathability of a jacket.

Mechanical venting is achieved either by pit zips or a two way zipper. A toasty jacket like Nuclei SV definitely has the potential to overheat most of us even when using it for low output activities (e.g walking).

So it's amazing to have an option like this - especially if you have a special desire about not sweating but at the same time you wouldn't want to get cold either.

In other words, it allows fine tuning for the warmth level.

Packed size

Packed size of Nuclei SV isn't that small.

That said, when it comes to down vs synthetic jackets, higher weight and bigger packed sizes are what you trade off in return for amazing weather resistances. Because down always packs smaller.

I still think it's a must to make this feature available in all synthetic jackets as it adds to the versatility quite a bit and is almost always worth the extra price. Most other Arc'teryx jackets don't offer this feature.

Conclusion

Arc’teryx Alpha Parka Review

Last updated: December 14, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

The release of Alpha Parka once again revealed the reason why Arc'teryx as a brand is the Apple of the technical outerwear industry. The products they launch are so far beyond today's textile technology that their designs orient the direction of the evolution of jackets.

Alpha Parka (Men's - Women's) is the warmest jacket Arc'teryx has ever manufactured.

Its 296 grams of 800 FP down provides extreme warmth, and makes the Alpha Parka the loftiest Arc'teryx down jacket of all time, standing at 251,600 cubic inches (=296 x 800) of total fill.

On top of that, this absolute unit of a parka is also reinforced with a whooping 90 gsm of Coreloft synthetic insulation, which is extraordinary when you look at the industry standards from this point of view.

As if all these aren't enough, together with its cousin Alpha Lightweight Parka (Men's - Women's), Alpha Parka is also the only Gore-Tex down jackets Arc'teryx has ever manufactured.

I know. Just shot after shot with no pause. Hard to believe how rich this jacket is in terms of performance and capability.

Bring all these together and you get a jacket that almost looks and feels like it's from the future... and of course, a staggering price tag in return.

No other jacket impresses me even nearly as much as the Alpha Parka (Men's - Women's). As long as it's dry and extremely cold out there, it can be counted on without any second thought. Not only is it the warmest Arc'teryx jacket of all time, it's also the only Gore-Tex Arc'teryx down jacket that Arc'teryx has ever manufactured.

It also stuffs into itself and comes with a two way zipper to allow for more comfort and mechanical venting where needed, which makes it one of the most versatile jackets out there (hiking, mountaineering, ice climbing, walking around town, you name it). The only downside to this astonishing item is its staggering price.

Warmth

Arc'teryx Alpha Parka is the warmest jacket Arc'teryx has ever manufactured.

As if 296 grams of 800 FP down wasn't enough, this absolute unit of a parka is also reinforced with a generous 90 gsm of Coreloft synthetic insulation in moisture heavy areas.
