Best Patagonia Jackets for Winter
Warmest Patagonia Jacket: Grade VII Parka
Best for extreme cold and expedition use. For most people, this level of warmth is unnecessary — but if you need the absolute warmest option, this is it.
Maximum warmth, but highly specialized.
The Grade VII Parka is the warmest jacket Patagonia makes. It’s built for mountaineering and extreme cold environments where maximum insulation is critical. It features climbing specific features like a helmet compatible hood and double zipper for use with a harness. It has a very roomy fit allowing for layers, but be aware that it looks extremely bulky and doesn't wear well as a casual jacket.
Best Overall: Patagonia Down Sweater
This is the best all around winter jacket from Patagonia.
The Down Sweater offers the best balance of warmth, weight, and versatility. It’s ideal for everyday winter use, travel, and light outdoor activity. If you need single jacket for general three-season use, this is it. The insulation is too much for summer, but this jacket is suitable for Spring, Fall , and Winter (even in a light rain, but not a downpour). For most people, the Down Sweater Hoody is the better choice because it adds warmth and versatility with minimal weight.
See our in depth comparison of the Down Sweater with the Micro Puff and Nano Puff.
Best Waterproof Insulated Winter Jacket: Patagonia Jackson Glacier Jacket
Best for wet, cold, and urban winter conditions. Heavier and bulkier than the Down Sweater, but warmer and waterproof.
The Jackson Glacier Jacket combines insulation with a waterproof shell, making it a strong choice for cold, wet environments where down jackets like the Down Sweater can struggle. It uses a 75D 2-layer waterproof recycled Polyester which is PFAS-free. For more on the best PFAS-free jackets, see our article.
The Jackson Glacier heavier and bulkier than the Down Sweater, but more comfortable for everyday wear in snow, rain, and slushy conditions. It also looks great. For even more warmth and style go for the Jackson Glacier Parka (men's / women's), which is a few inches longer.
Best Synthetic Winter Jacket: Patagonia DAS Parka
Best for keeping you warm even if it gets wet.
The DAS Parka performs reliably in wet and snowy conditions where down struggles. While it is described as a belay jacket, this is a versatile insulated piece ready for almost any weather. It uses PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation Eco with Cross Core® technology to feel soft like down but still keep you warm when wet.
Best Lightweight Winter Jacket: Patagonia Nano Puff
Best for mild winter and versatility.
See our full article comparing the Patagonia Nano Puff and Micro Puff.
The Nano Puff is the best lightweight option for most people and works well across a wide range of conditions. It's one of our all-time favorite daily jackets for three season use. It's also a great midlayer under your ski shell. Be sure to see our article and video for a deeper look at this perennial favorite.

Best Patagonia Jackets for Running

Best overall: Patagonia Houdini Jacket
Lightweight wind shell for everyday running.
The Houdini is made from 1.2-oz 100% recycled nylon ripstop, with a pfas-free DWR coating. With a slim fit and weighing only 105 g (3.7 oz), this jacket is excellent for running on the road or trail when you need to take the bite out of the wind. The water-resistant coating makes this jacket great for short periods of precipitation, but if rain protection is your priority then look at the Storm Racer.
Best for running in the rain: Patagonia Storm Racer
Ultralight waterproof shell designed for running.
This jacket stashes down to nothing, but boasts 3-layer waterproof construction. I keep it in my Ultimate Hydration running vest when on the trail and have also used it as my rain layer for bikepacking. Like other H2No fabrics from Patagonia, the 2.2-oz 20-denier 100% recycled nylon ripstop face fabric is soft and doesn't crinkly while you run.
I use my Patagonia Storm Racer for running and riding. This was a chilly morning on the Aquarius Trail.
Best for cold runs: Patagonia Nano-Air Ultralight
A touch of insulation for high-output activities in cold weather.
37°F and breezy were perfect conditions for testing the Patagonia Nano Air Ultralight
I often have trouble getting my layering right for cold runs. It's so easy to end up wearing too much and sweating more than I should in the cold. The Nano-Air Ultralight combines air-permeable shadow stretch ripstop with 20-g FullRange® 100% recycled polyester insulation for a lightly insulated jacket which is highly breathable. To ensure you can dump heat when working hard, there are single-layer non-insulated panels under the arms.

Best Patagonia Jackets for Hiking & Backpacking

| Ultralight Warmth | Micro Puff (men's / women's) |
| Cold and Active | Nano-Air (men's / women's) |
| Rain and weather protection | Granite Crest (men's / women's) |
Best Ultralight insulation for backpacking: Patagonia Micro Puff
Excellent warmth per gram.
The Micro Puff Hoody is an amazingly warm layer for its scant 298 g (10.5 oz). The PlumaFill insulation lofts like down and you'd be forgiven for thinking this is an 800-fill jacket. If you primarily want a midlayer under a snow shell, then go for the non-hooded Micro Puff jacket, otherwise go for the hood for a full coverage.

Best Patagonia Jackets for Skiing

|---|---|
| Resort / Most People | Powder Town (men's / women's) |
| All-mountain | Untracked (men's / women's) |
| Touring / Uphill | Stormstride (men's / women's) |
Best overall jacket for skiing: Patagonia Powder Town
See our full review of the Patagonia Powder Town and Insulated Powder Town jackets and bibs.
I've done a lot of resort skiing and backcountry laps in my standard Powder Town jacket and bibs.
The Powder Town ski jacket offers solid weather protection at a super value. It may not be as light as more technical shells, but the fabric feels great and it has all of the ski-specific features you'd expect (helmet compatible hood, pass pocket, etc..). It's mix of performance and low price makes it the clear choice for resort riders and anyone needing an all-around winter shell. For added warmth, choose the Insulated Powder Town (men's / women's).
Here is a table showing the different models available in the Patagonia Powder Town series.
| Product | Price (USD) | Weight (men's / women's) |
|---|---|---|
| Powder Town Jacket (men's / women's) | $349 | 1004 g / 964 g |
| Insulated Powder Town Jacket (men's / women's) | $399 | 1140 g / 1090 g |
Best all-mountain ski jacket: Patagonia Untracked
In-bounds or in the wild the Patagonia Untracked is ready.
The Patagonia Untracked uses a 3-layer GORE-TEX ePE face fabric and quick-wicking flannel interior. The result is a jacket that is breathable and waterproof, but still not overly crinkly. The feel of this fabric has become a hallmark of Patagonia jackets, which along with Mammut (see our look at the best Mammut jackets) stand out from typical ski and rain gear. The Untracked has underarm zippered vets and a rfid pass pocket. If you spend time in the side-country or beyond, this is your one-quiver jacket for it all.
Best uphill / touring jacket: Patagonia Stormstride
I've been using the Patagonia Stormstride for two winters and it has become my favorite kit for my uphill efforts and short tours. The weather protection is solid, but if you have big backcountry objectives then go for the Untracked . For really hard uphill efforts, or all-day touring though I haven't found another shell that breathes as well and feels as soft as the Stormstride. If you like the up as much as the down, then this is the jacket. Be sure to see our full review of the Stormstride.

| Alpine / Climbing | Triolet (men's / women's) | 3-layer, 5-oz 75-denier 100% recycled polyester GORE-TEX ePE |
Best Overall Rain Jacket: Patagonia Torrentshell 3L
I'm actually surprised at how much I like the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L. It's been a while since I owned a jacket aimed at everyday and casual use, as I've gravitated to more technical rain shells. Here's what I have realized - The Torrentshell 3L fits great, feels great, and will work totally fine for hiking and backpacking, as well as downtown. If your priority is a lightweight shell for the trail, or protection for high alpine missions then get something more technical. The Torrentshell 3L doesn't have a helmet compatible hood for climbing, but it does offer zippered underarm vents. If what you need is a solid rain jacket that you can wear around town or stuff in your daypack, then get the Torrentshell 3L.
Patagonia Jacket Categories Explained
The key is proper layering based on your conditions. Here is a great page from Patagonia on how to layer.
How to Choose the Right Patagonia Jacket
Start by thinking about how you will use your jacket and what your priorities are.
Warmth vs Weight
Again, a midweight jacket like the Down Sweater (men's / women's) is the sweet spot. If you need a balance of of warmth and weight for something like backpacking though then there is the ultralight Micro Puff Hoody (men's / women's).
Activity Level
- Low activity - You want more insulation to keep you warm.
- High activity - Balance insulation with breathable layers (Nano-Air (men's / women's) and Nano-Air Ultralight (men's / women's))
