Patagonia insulated jackets

Patagonia Vosque vs Tres Parka

Last updated: July 30, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

Patagonia Tres.

So I was wondering about this and couldn't really find any info online. So I ended up contacting Patagonia's Customer Service (see full chat text below).

In summary; if you want to maximize warmth and weather protection; then Tres is probably your best bet - since it's very, very warm (equipped with a whooping 150 grams of down). Otherwise, I'd recommend you to base your decision on their looks above all else.

Speaking of which - Tres look prettier to most.

I'd say, generally speaking, when it's dry out, with only a long sleeved shirt under and without a shell on top, with a mild wind and a very low to no activity level...

The approximate lowest temperatures an average person can wear these jackets without feeling cold can be listed as around 5 deg F (-15 deg C) for Tres and around 10 deg F (-12 deg C) for Vosque.

If you think you run hotter or colder than the average person, then shift these temperatures ranges accordingly.

Here's my chat with the awesome Patagonia Rep Alex

Alex (08.01.2020 17:09:54): Hello Canberk! My name is Alex. How may I help you today?

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:10:46): Hi Alex!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:10:51): Hey there!

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:10:53): I'm gathering information for a wide range of possible buyers of Women's Vosque and Tres Parkas (all for possibly different types of purposes), so I'd appreciate if you could share their technical & practical differences with me, as well as their most suitable intended uses. What are the advantages & disadvantages of one over the other?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:11:13): Sure, let me pull them up.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:11:17): How do they compare in terms of warmth, breathability, durability, weather resistance and bagginess/fit?

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:11:19): Thank you!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:11:23): Of course!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:12:54): So the Tres Parka will be warmer and will weigh a little more. The outer shell on the Vosque is a little more durable, but not by much.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:13:03): Both are waterproof.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:13:32): Alright

Alex (08.01.2020 17:13:38): The Tres Parka uses Down Insulation while the Vosque uses Synthetic Insulation too.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:14:05): Down won't stay warm if it soaks through if you're wearing just the inner layer on its own, synthetic will.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:14:51): But both inner layers are water resistant - so they'll repel light rain/snow for around an hour or two, or heavy rain/snow for about 5-10 minutes.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:15:20): That's basically all the major differences there!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:16:03): Did you have any other questions about these at all?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:16:23): Or about anything else?

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:16:46): Thank you so much Alex!

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:16:52): These are very, very helpful

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:16:56): How warmer is the Tres than the Vosque?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:16:58): You got it!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:17:16): It's noticeably warmer. Where do you live?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:17:21): Or where will these be used?

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:18:15): Ah I'm not looking to get them just for myself or a specific type of user

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:18:26): It's more for a wider range of buyers

Alex (08.01.2020 17:18:28): The Vosque will be more versatile then.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:18:32): Since it's less warm.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:19:03): You'll have a greater temperature range that you can wear it in, and if someone is in a colder part of the world, they can layer a light fleece under it in the winter.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:19:19): Then it'll be a Spring/Winter/Fall coat.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:19:37): How many grams of down does the Tres have?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:19:39): The Tres is more ideal for just winter, it's a bit warm for Spring and Fall in a lot of places.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:19:41): Let me see.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:19:48): Thank you!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:19:52): Sure thing!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:20:35): 150 grams

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:20:56): And it isn't equipped with any synthetic insulation, right?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:21:02): Not on the Tres, no.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:21:23): What about the amount of down in Vosque?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:21:35): It doesn't have Down, it uses synthetic insulation.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:21:38): Let me see how much.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:21:56): OK, I'm waiting, thank you!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:22:30): You got it!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:24:38): So synthetic insulation isn't measured by overall weight, it's measured by how much a 1 meter by 1 meter piece of the insulation weighs. In the Vosque, it uses 100 grams of synthetic insulation.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:25:03): I see

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:25:11): I guess that's it, then

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:25:16): Thanks a lot Alex!

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:25:19): Have a great day

Alex (08.01.2020 17:25:22): You got it Canberk!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:25:32): You too! Let us know if you have any more questions come up!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:25:38): Thanks for chatting in! If you have a moment, I'd really appreciate it if you would take this quick survey: [link]

Patagonia Nano Puff vs Down Sweater

Last updated: October 31, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

Down Sweater is revised for FW23, and the information given in this article is only applicable to this most recent version.

The main highlight in this revision is in the fill weight - it's increased from 104 to 150 grams. A pretty big difference. Number of internal drop-in pockets has also been increased from 1 to 2.

The new FW23 Down Sweater (Men's - Women's).

If you're stuck between getting either a Down Sweater or a Nano Puff, then making up your mind should be rather easy. Because, the Down Sweater is a down jacket (duh), whereas the Nano Puff is a synthetic insulated jacket.

This means that these two are oriented towards completely different best uses.

Down Sweater is warmer than the Nano Puff (see temperature ratings below), but only consider it for dry areas, because under precipitation it won't only soak water but it'll also lose its insulating power.

Nano Puff, on the other hand, is more weather resistant, lighter and more packable than the Down Sweater.

  • If you're not planning to perform high output activities with these jackets...

Then I'd absolutely get the Down Sweater for dry areas. A stunning jacket. For damp areas, Nano Puff would certainly be better than the Down Sweater, but even a better option would be the Micro Puff here. See Nano Puff vs Micro Puff article if you'd like to read more about this.

  • If you're planning to perform high output activities less than, say, once every two weeks with these jackets...

Then I'd get the Nano Puff even if it offers mediocre breathability because it certainly is more suitable than the Down Sweater in this regard. It's also better than the Micro Puff since the face fabric of Micro Puff is extremely fragile, unlike Nano Puff's burly face fabric.

  • If you're planning to perform high output activities more than, say, once every two weeks with these jackets...

Then forget about these jackets because none of them would cut it. Consider getting a DAS Light Hoody (Men's - Women's) or a Nano Air (Men's - Women's) instead.

These are the approximate lowest temperatures you can wear each jacket without feeling uncomfortably cold, assuming:

  • you only have a shirt under and no shell over,
  • during daily use (strolls, power walks etc at most - no high output activities),
  • with just a little bit wind,
  • and in dry weather.

Read more about this chart here in my Insulated Outerwear Temperature Ratings Guide. Also my Best Patagonia Jackets post.

If you think you run warmer or colder than the average person, then shift temperature ranges accordingly.

Lastly - make sure to check out Patagonia.com Web Specials before you buy.

Nano Puff (Men's - Women's - see image) will preserve its insulating power even when wet.

What about when it's rainy, humid, snowy, wet, and/or damp?

As I explained earlier, warmth of Down Sweater will suffer significantly when it gets wet.

The down inside the Down Sweater provides warmth by heating the air it had trapped among its vacant spots. When the down gets soaked, these spots are no longer as large (or even exist - depending on the liquid intensity).

This causes the Down Sweater to lose its insulating power.

The Nano Puff, on the other hand, provides warmth via synthetic insulation instead of down. It successfully mimics the heating capability of down, and on top of that, it doesn't lose its insulating power when it gets wet either, although it comes with its own disadvantages and downsides:

  • The more often you stuff the Nano Puff into its own sack, the quicker it'll get old and in the long run (say, 3-4 years), it'll eventually lose its insulating power. The Down Sweater, on the other hand, can provide the very same warmth for decades.

If a fair amount of days are damp AND colder than 30 - 40 deg F's (0 - 5 deg C's) where you live, then Nano Puff wouldn't cut it. I'd recommend you to get something superior like the Arc'teryx's Fission SV. Or a Parka, such as Camosun, Therme or Thorsen.

Weather Resistance

Down Sweater is less water resistant than the Nano Puff because of the vulnerability of its down insulation.

Yes, both of these jackets are coated with DWR, which does help with preventing the rain drops from getting soaked into the internal surface of the Down Sweater, but doesn't help so much with its warmth.

  • What is DWR by the way?

DWR is a coating.

It's basically sprayed on to the surface of these jackets as a finish. It stands for Durable Water Repellent - which means that water will be repelled under wet conditions instead of soaking into the fabric.

DWR also decreases dry time.

It's a good thing these jackets are coated in DWR, but pay attention to the fact that DWR is a coating - meaning that it will wear off over time.

Which is why you might want to invest in a DWR spray such as this one for after treatment.

As you see, there's a strong correlation between FP x FW and temperature ratings, but not more than, say, 80%. I explained why this happens here in this post of mine.

So, once the fill of Down Sweater gets wet - its warmth will drop significantly and DWR doesn't change that dramatically.

They are, however, comparable in terms of wind resistance and both do a pretty good job in that manner.

Durability

Outer face of the Nano Puff (1.4-oz 20-denier for shell and 1.3-oz 22-denier for lining) is more robust than the Down Sweater (1.4-oz 20x30-denier in shell and 1.4-oz 20-denier in lining).

It still isn't anywhere near Arc'teryx's Atom AR as I laid out in this post, but I'd still classify it as a durable hoody.

Breathability

These jackets aren't made using advanced breathable membranes, and they aren't equipped with pit zips (or mesh panels) either - so I'd recommend you to absolutely forget about getting these jackets if breathability is one of your expectations.

They aren't designed to breathe anyway and hence both are worse than average.

Style

Down Sweater looks prettier to me. But I certainly get the hype around Micro and Nano Puff jackets.

Stuff Sacks

Some sites may claim that the Down Sweater doesn't pack into its own pocket - but it does.

It's packed a little larger than the Nano Puff - but the difference is minimal as you see here. It's still tiny.

Conclusion

Out in dry weather, the Down Sweater is noticeably warmer than the Nano Puff, but it might be a superior option due to its higher durability. It, however, loses its insulating capability significantly when it gets wet, so Nano Puff could be a better choice for damp areas.

Patagonia Micro Puff vs Down Sweater

Last updated: October 31, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

In FW23, Patagonia revised both of Micro Puff and Down Sweater. See updates:

Highlights of the Down Sweater update:

  • Fill weight is increased from 104 grams to 150 grams (main update),
  • Number of internal drop-in pockets has been increased from 1 to 2,
  • Outer fabric is now NetPlus (recycled waste) shell.

Highlights of the Micro Puff update:

  • Number of internal drop-in pockets has been increased from 1 to 2,
  • Outer fabric is now NetPlus (recycled waste) shell.

There has also been small changes made in the colors, fit and hood sizes.

FW23 Down Sweater (Men's - Women's). Probably one of the greatest and most popular casual down jackets out there.

Patagonia's Down Sweater and Micro Puff are both light, packable, warm and fantastic all-doer casual jackets. Depending on the weather, they both can be used as mid-layers or stand alone pieces. They're pretty much identical in terms of best use.

Their main difference lies in their methods of insulation: Down vs Synthetic.

Down Sweater is warmer than the Micro Puff, but since down loses insulating power under wet conditions, only consider it for dry areas. Micro Puff, on the other hand, is more weather resistant (owing to its synthetic insulation), lighter and more packable than the Down Sweater.

Additionally, if you're planning to perform high output activities more than, say, once every two weeks, then neither of these jackets would cut it for you - even the Micro Puff (fragile outer fabric and mediocre breathability).

So, in that case, consider getting Patagonia DAS Light Hoody (Men's - Women's) and Patagonia Nano Air (Men's - Women's).

I've also talked to the Patagonia Customer Service about Micro Puff vs Down Sweater, and shared the screenshots here in this post.

The motivation behind trying to come up with a brand new insulation technique (which, ended up being synthetic insulation) was to defy the two strong disadvantages of down (used in Down Sweater):

  • Loss of insulating capability when it's wet/damp out.
  • Delayed warmth after putting it on.

Overcoming these disadvantages comes with its own costs and downsides - which eventually made up the disadvantages of synthetic insulation (used in the Micro Puff):

  • Fragile face fabric (specific to Micro Puff),
  • Loss of insulating capability after 3-4 years.

These are the 4 key points to consider.

  • Latest on the blog:
  • CLO Values Explained: Primaloft, Coreloft, Thermatek, Plumafill & More
  • West & South Iceland: I visited again, and here's the best itinerary
  • #A sidenote here: Patagonia.com's Web Specials discounts are GOOOLLLDDD. Highly recommend you to check it out before you buy.

The second point of Micro Puff is typically looked at as a disadvantage of sleeping bags and quilts with synthetic insulation, and often not so much of the clothing since (1) most of us tend to renew our casual wear wardrobe much more often than our outdoor gear and (2) the wearing out occurs each time the jacket is stuffed into its own sack - rather than occurring simply as the time passes.

That's why, if you're planning to use your Micro Puff or Down Sweater mostly casually when it's cold out in the neighborhood (which is what they are mostly designed for anyway), then I'd recommend you to forget about the second disadvantage of Micro Puff.

For a mostly dry weather use, Down Sweater can be a better choice since its down insulation will last years longer than the Micro Puff.

If, on the other hand, you're planning to wear them when skiing, traveling, hiking and/or camping for a fair amount of time, then I'd recommend you to keep this disadvantage in your minds as you read on since packability can't be completely overlooked in your case.

Warmth

For folks who are unaware of the basic working principle of Down Sweater's down insulation, here's a two sentence introduction first (this is important).

Down provides warmth by heating and holding on to the air cluster trapped within its vacant spots. Synthetic insulation in the Micro Puff basically tries and mimics this exact process of down - but via artificial, man-made equipment (65 grams of PlumaFill).

So, the higher the total volume of these empty spots inside the down, the more the air is going to be heated, and hence the provided warmth will be higher. Because the down's ability to loft gets lost as it gets wet, so does its ability to trap/heat more air.

Ultimately, its warmth will be impacted negatively.

This working principle is also why the fully extended volume of (dry) down is a crucial metric (referred to as FP) and determines the down's quality, warmth potential, durability and price tag.

800 FP down of our Down Sweater will feel much warmer, prove solid performance for more years and hence also be a more expensive pick than a 700 FP down.

To my knowledge, FP numbers start from 450 and goes up to 950. This makes the 800 FP down of Down Sweater one of the highest quality fills in today's world.

This doesn't mean that it's impossible to manufacture a clothing piece using a rather low quality (say, 500 FP down) and make it quite warm. You perfectly can - but you'd just have to stuff a bunch of it - quite a bit more than the amount it would take if you had used a 800 FP down instead.

Delayed warmth

As grueling as it sounds, this entire process of the down heating and holding on to the air cluster... takes time. Longer than the synthetic insulation.

This makes up one of the two disadvantages of the Down Sweater laid out above. You don't get to feel the cozy warmth the moment you put on your Down Sweater.

With the Micro Puff, though; it doesn't take that much until the maximum potential warmth is achieved. The difference is noticeable.

Center back length

The Down Sweater is extremely short, which affects its warmth. This can be a disadvantage if you aren't planning to insulate your legs, so keep that in mind.

Durability

And this, is the disadvantage of Micro Puff.

I know I've kept saying that the insulating power of Down Sweater can last for decades (much shorter for the Micro Puff), and that's true; but there's one more parameter there:

  • How often are you going to be stuffing them into their own sacks?

The quicker loss of Micro Puff's insulation capability doesn't occur when these jackets are simply at rest.

Instead, it occurs each time you stuff the Micro Puff into its own sack and then release it back. The more you do this cycle, the quicker it'll get old.

For the Down Sweater, on the other hand, it doesn't really matter, since its insulation is very durable. So you can stop worrying about it and instead use the stuff sack freely (which you'll also do with the Micro Puff anyway... so it'll get older quicker).

Regardless of the insulation, face fabric of Micro Puff is also fairly fragile.

Weather Resistance

Micro Puff is more weather resistant than Down Sweater. Not only does it stand better against wind and precipitation, but its warmth also doesn't decrease when the jacket gets wet (which, as mentioned earlier, isn't the case with Down Sweater).

The difference isn't huge, by the way, but definitely is noticeable.

By the way, they're both coated with DWR.

Yes, the DWR does help with preventing the rain drops from getting soaked into the internal surface of the Down Sweater, but doesn't help so much with its warmth.

Again, once the fill gets wet, its warmth will drop significantly. Depending on the precipitation, the water will get in, too.

Pockets

Both offer 2 internal drop-in pockets (large enough to fit 110 mm skins) and 2 external hand warmer pockets.

Breathability

Face fabric of Micro Puff (0.7-oz 10-denier shell and lining) breathes slightly better than the Down Sweater (1.4-oz 20x30-denier shell and 1.4-oz 20-denier lining).

But, neither of these jackets are designed to breathe and hence are terrible in this department. They're not equipped with pit zips either, so I'd recommend you to forget about getting these jackets if breathability is one of your expectations.

Check out Nano Air (Men's - Women's) in that case.

Style

To most people, Down Sweater looks prettier (especially this Carbon color is liked by many - including me).

Micro Puff... I don't know. Looks overly wrinkled and pretty bad. At least to me.

Weight and Packability

Micro Puff offers an exceptional level of warmth to weight ratio. This is a bit strange because you'd actually expect this from a down product first and synthetic product second.

Micro Puff is the lightest and most packable synthetic insulated puffy in Patagonia's line-up.

My discussion with the Patagonia Rep

Patagonia Nano Air [Fall 2019] Update: What is new?

Last updated: August 11, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

Most recent (Fall 2019 model) Nano Air.

As some of you know, Nano Air received an update in Fall 2019.

On Patagonia's site, this is the new hoody.

I couldn't find any information about this online, so decided to contact the customer service myself.

Here's the summary of what I found:

  • Hemcord got replaced with a non-adjustable elastic. You could use the drawcord to adjust a more a snug fit to the hips when required - which now you can't do.
  • Durability and abrasion resistances seem to have improved.
  • It used to have 2 chest (not hand) pockets, now it has only 1.
  • Surface material is now smoother and feels somehow more pleasant in your hands.
  • The design changed: Horizontal lines through the front bottom are removed. It also looks more homogeneous now. We think it looks much better now and hence increased the style rating of the Nano Air as you can see in this post.

Here's what the representative told me first:

  • Fabric is now 87% recycled.
  • 3-D texture which improves the next to skin feel and piling resistance.
  • FullRange Insulation is now 40% recycled.
  • Fabric is now Bluesign certified and Fair Trade certified.
  • Overall it is 10% lighter and more pack-able.

And how would one experience these technical differences when using? In terms of, for example; durability, warmth, weather resistance, breathability, comfort etc?

Here's what the rep told me about this:

"I think you'll definitely notice that this model is more durable - one of the things we get asked about all the time is the piling of our items. Piling comes with trying new recycled fabrics, so the fact this is 87% recycled and we're seeing reduced piling is really cool. The Nano Air Hoody also has 60 grams of insulation to keep you warm. It's very breathable, which makes it nice so you don't have to keep putting it on and off on days where the temperature is always changing or you're occasionally physically active.

I used to work at a grocery store, which was very labor intensive. One of my coworkers would wear his Nano Air Hoody everyday. He loved how warm it kept him in the morning but also cool enough to wear it all day even when he was doing heavy labor jobs (breathability). I'd ask him about it all the time because I'd be changing layers throughout the day, and was jealous that he never needed to do that. He had the light blue and even with the job he was doing, I didn't see any damage, or stains on the jacket. I believe that he had the 2017 season jacket but seeing it first hand how much even an older Nano Air could handle, I can only imagine how durable the 2019 season can be."

Obviously there's also at least a little bit of a marketing here - but I agree with everything she says except the durability part. Yes, durability did improve, but Nano Air is still a fragile, highly technical piece that wouldn't be able to handle a lot of damage.

If you'd like to look at something a little less breathable but with significantly more abrasion resistance and durability, I'd recommend checking out the Proton LT.

Back to my convo with the rep...

She then told me that the hemcord got replaced with a non-adjustable elastic (after I asked her so... lol), and also the number of chest pockets got decreased from 2 to 1 of them (you can see this conversation in the screenshot below).

In the end...

These are the changes (same list in the introduction):

DWR stays the same.

  • What's DWR by the way?

DWR is a coating. It's basically sprayed on to the surface of these jackets as a finish. It stands for Durable Water Repellent - which means that both these jackets will "repel" water under wet conditions. Instead of soaking into the fabric, the water will be smoothly slipping down their surface. DWR also decreases dry time.

It's a good thing that both jackets are coated in DWR, but pay attention to the fact that DWR is a coating - meaning that it will wear off over time.

Which is why you might want to invest in a DWR repellent spray such as this one, which is the product recommended by Patagonia staff themselves.

That's it. Hope this is helpful for you, guys.

Thanks a lot for reading. Happy trails & travels.

Patagonia Nano Puff vs Micro Puff

Last updated: November 18, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

The Micro Puff is updated for FW23. The main highlight is in the number of internal drop-in pockets, which has been increased from 1 to 2.

Nano Puff and Micro Puff are more alike than different. Micro Puff is a bit lighter, more packable, offers one more internal pocket and is just a little bit warmer (nothing noticeable though). Nano Puff, on the other hand, comes with a burlier face fabric, and hence is slightly more durable and weather/abrasion resistant than the Micro Puff.

Do take the information given in this article into consideration when deciding between them. But in the end I'd probably go after the one that I like the looks of the most. That's how similar these two are.

Here's how these differences play out in practice:

  • If you're not planning to perform any high output activities whatsoever with these jackets...

Then I'd get the Micro Puff. If you're almost always going to be using the jacket in dry areas, then maybe also consider the Down Sweater (Men's - Women's - read how it compares to Nano Puff - read how it compares to Micro Puff).

  • If you're planning to perform high output activities less than, say, once every two weeks with these jackets...

Then you can get either one. If abrasion resistance is more important to you (bouldering, climbing, etc), get the Nano Puff. If packability and weight is more important, get the Micro Puff - but keep in mind that the face fabric of Micro Puff is extremely fragile (hence the superior packability).

Both of these jackets offer mediocre breathability. But once every two weeks shouldn't be that much of a problem.

  • If you're planning to perform high output activities more than, say, once every two weeks with these jackets...

Then forget about them because neither would cut it. Both offer mediocre breathability.

I also talked to the Patagonia Customer Service myself, made additional research and laid out what I found about the differences between Patagonia Nano Puff and Micro Puff Jackets.

When it comes to warmth to weight ratio, it's difficult to beat the Micro Puff.

Warmth

Don't worry, I'm not going to make this post a scientific article, but let me mention one thing.

Generally speaking, in order to score the warmth ratings of insulated products, Fill Power (FP) term is being used in today's market.

It's the measured loft of down. In other words, it's the end size of the down when it's at rest, e.g. "fully expanded volume".

The higher the FP rating of an insulator, the warmer it is (assuming everything else is equal).

That said...

These jackets are insulated via synthetic materials instead of down.

So instead of FP, they use language such as "PlumaFill" or "PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco".

I did some research to figure their equivalent down qualities, and found this:

Warmth of PlumaFill is equivalent to around 650 fill. PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco, on the other hand, is equivalent to .62 dry CLO value and roughly corresponds to 500 fill.

So...

PlumaFill insulation of Micro Puff does not only offer better insulation compared to Nano Puff's PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco - but its quantity is ALSO more than Nano Puff (65 grams vs 60 grams).

That said, fill power isn't the end-all be-all, although it's the most important. Things like fabric thickness also affect warmth and actually help the Nano close the gap with the Micro Puff in terms of warmth to some degree.

Read more on this:

This means that Micro Puff will offer more warmth, that's certain. But... how warmer it will feel when you're wearing it?

  • What's the ULTIMATE result?

Well, according to this chart by Patagonia Micro Puff is just over Nano when it comes to warmth.

And the rep said:

Compressibility

This is mostly determined by the thicknesses of shell and lining fabrics of jackets. Obviously, the thinner the fabrics, the more compressible the product will become.

In our case, Nano Puff vs Micro Puff, the difference is that Nano Puff uses 1.4-oz 20-denier for shell and 1.3-oz 22-denier for lining fabrics (both w/ DWR); whereas Micro Puff uses 0.7-oz 10-denier Quantum Perfex w/ DWR for both shell and lining.

The one that Micro Puff uses (Quantum Perfex) is the LIGHTEST that Patagonia uses!

Yes, thinner fabrics are used for Micro Puff - but fabrics of Nano Puff are also quite thin. Also, Micro Puff is filled with a higher FP down and with MORE of it, which roughly balances out the sack sizes.

Here's the result.

Weather & Abrasion Resistance

Nano Puff is superior to Micro Puff in terms of weather and abrasion resistances. The difference is much more apparent for the latter, though. This can be something to consider if you're planning to do climbing with this jacket on.

However, these jackets aren't THAT different in any of these departments, so obviously Nano Puff isn't quite robust either.

Pockets

Both of these jackets offer two external hand warmer pockets. In addition to that, Nano Puff offers one internal zippered chest pocket and Micro Puff offers two internal drop in pockets.

Looks.

Conclusion

Nano Puff and Micro Puff are more alike than different. Micro Puff is quite a bit lighter and more packable, and just a little bit warmer (nothing noticeable though). Nano Puff, on the other hand, comes with a burlier face fabric, and hence slightly more weather and abrasion resistant than the Micro Puff.
