Arc’teryx Therme Parka Review

Last updated: January 9, 2023 by Canberk Koksal

Arc'teryx's Therme line contains 3 products:

  • https://arcteryx.com/us/en/shop/mens/therme-parka (revised FW23)
    • The most popular, flagship Therme Parka. Although fill weight remains the same at 120 grams, in FW23, 100 + 140 gsm synthetic insulation is reduced to 60 + 80 gsm.
  • https://arcteryx.com/us/en/shop/mens/therme-insulated-jacket (formerly Therme LT Jacket. Revised for FW23)
    • In FW23, 80 gsm insulation is reduced to 40 gsm. This cuts back the warmth quite a bit. There are much better Arc'teryx jackets around this warmth level, so I pretty much see no reason to get Therme Insulated Jacket over any one of them. I also personally do not think that this jacket is going to last long.
  • https://arcteryx.com/us/en/shop/mens/therme-sv-parka (Released FW23)
    • Warmest Arc'teryx parka of all time. Longest of all 3 options.
    • It's even warmer than the all-time-warmest-Arc'teryx-parka, the Thorsen Parka (Men's - read review). It's so warm that even when it's pretty cold but not freezing (around, say, 20 deg F (-7 deg C)), this parka has the potential to overheat most of us.

Make sure to see the Therme SV Parka vs Therme Parka vs Therme Insulated Jacket side by side comparison page at arcteryx.com. It's a great way to compare their specs side by side.

You might also want to check out Arc'teryx's Jacket Finder tool.

I'm going to review Therme Parka (item #1) in this article.

The main change is in the synthetic insulation: It's been cut back from 100 + 140 gsm of Coreloft to 60 + 80 gsm of it.

Almost HALF of the synthetic insulation is gone. Although the fill weight remains the same (which is a bigger factor when it comes to determining the end warmth of a blend jacket), this still is pretty big news in my book.

Seems like Arc'teryx already having extremely warm parkas (formerly Thorsen and now Therme SV - mind you that these two are different products and aren't replacements of one another) has forced them go this way. They might have wanted to up the variety in their catalogue.

Because even the previous Therme Parka had the potential to come too warm for UK winter every now and then - let alone Thorsen Parka and Therme SV Parka. There are few places in the world where you can wear them without overheating.

So enter the revised FW23 Therme Parka.

If you're looking to get a parka for casual outgoings when it's pretty cold (see temperature ratings for more info), then Therme could respond very well to your needs.

View full table at https://outdoorcrunch.com/best-arcteryx-jacket/.

If you're confused now and don't know which jacket best corresponds to your own needs, then follow the advice given in https://arcteryx.com/us/en/shop/jacket-finder/.

The temperature ratings in this list are intended to represent the lowest temperatures you can wear each jacket without feeling uncomfortably cold.

Keep in mind that these are only approximate values, assuming:

  • worn over a shirt only and no shell over,
  • during daily use (strolls, power walks etc at most - no high output activities),
  • with light wind,
  • and when it's dry out.

These values applicable to your torso only. Your hands, legs and feet are still subject to their own additional insulation.

The best practice is usually to use this table for comparing each jacket to one another, rather than pinpointing their ratings.

Also, ratings will best respond to males. As most women tend to run colder than men, for women, shifting these ratings a bit is recommended.

Always opt for the warmer option when in doubt. For jackets with Atom AR level warmth and beyond, recommended is almost always the hooded models.

Pre 2020 Therme Parka (Men's - see image). It's Arc'teryx's third warmest parka, coming after the beast Thorsen (Men's) and the Therme SV Parka (Men's). This older model was (much) warmer than the new 2023 Therme Parka.

You might also want to check out my Camosun vs Therme vs Thorsen article by the way.

Warmth

Down Insulation

One of the main reasons why this and other Arc'teryx parkas are so expensive is in the quality of their down.

750 FP down of the Therme is one of the highest quality down used in the entire market.

As a result, not only does this make the Therme equally warm at a much lower weight, but it also helps it provide the same insulation capability after years or even decades - unlike other lower quality down products.

Read more about this in my Temperature Ratings of Insulated Jackets post.

Additional Synthetic Insulation

One of my favorite things about Therme is in its synthetic insulation used in strategical areas.

This isn't extraordinary.

Down jackets, especially down parkas, tend to use synthetic insulation in addition. That's because down loses its insulating power when it gets wet, and hence the manufacturers solve this problem by sheltering the fill with synthetic insulators.

But only this, but the manufacturers also tend to use more of synthetic insulation in areas where more warmth, water resistance and/or durability are desired, such as shoulders, lower arms, back, etc.

This is why in some jackets you see two different numbers with the same unit. For Therme Parka, for example, this number is 60 + 80 gsm (grams square meter), which states the weight of insulation used per square meter. As you can guess, the number 80 here represents the density of reinforcements.

What is extraordinary about Therme Parka, on the other hand, is how MUCH of synthetic insulation it's equipped with.

Even after cutting it back almost by half (it was 140 + 100 gsm previously), 60 + 80 gsm is still serious amount.

Hell my Nuclei FL (Men's - read review) has only 65 gsm of synthetic insulation and zero down, but it still keeps me warm quite a bit. I've even traveled across Iceland in late March wearing nothing but my Nuclei FL + another strong base layer.

I'm not saying Nuclei FL is enough for Iceland, by the way. It most likely isn't. I just tend to run extremely warm. And I still did, by the way, take my Thorium AR (Men's - Women's - read review) there too, just in case.

The old Therme Parka.

Think about the level of warmth 60 + 80 AND 120 grams of 750 FP down would provide.

Weather Resistance

I'd highly doubt you'll wish having more weather resistance than what the Therme Parka has to offer.

This is an ordinary advantage for parkas. Because when manufacturing a parka, you don't have to worry about membrane breathability.

Because their intended use is casual in freezing temperatures. This helps a lot in the weather resistance department.

The weather protection and breathability usually have a negative correlation in between. It makes your job much easier when you only have to worry about one of them, without necessarily trying to find a good balance in between.

P75d Gore-Tex 2L face fabric of the Therme does exactly this. It's not (doesn't have to be) breathable, but it is quite weather resistant.

It's lighter than the Camosun's N150p-x Gore-Tex 2L, while offering slightly superior weather protection. Therme's face fabric is also softer, and smoother to the touch.

It also comes with DWR coating, by the way.

  • What is DWR by the way?

DWR is a coating.

It's basically sprayed on to the surface of these jackets as a finish. It stands for Durable Water Repellent - which means that water will be repelled under wet conditions instead of soaking into the fabric.

DWR also decreases dry time.

It's a good thing these jackets are coated in DWR, but pay attention to the fact that DWR is a coating - meaning that it will wear off over time.

Which is why you might want to invest in a DWR spray such as this one for after treatment.

As you see, there's a strong correlation between FP x FW and temperature ratings, but not more than, say, 80%. I explained why this happens here in this post of mine.

Two way zipper

If you're unaware, a two way main front zipper is what enables you to keep the upper half of the jacket zipped, while also keeping the bottom half unzipped.

This doesn't only help a lot with breathability but it also allows for more comfort when sitting down with long parkas (e.g Therme Parka), as the parka gets prevented from crumpling.

Some people don't like two way zippers, by the way. Their reasoning behind this is how often they make difficulties and stop working smoothly. Sure Arc'teryx warranty has your back, but why go through such a hassle if it's not that important to you?

So if that's the case, e.g if you dislike two way zippers, then check out this Arc'teryx Camosun Parka. It's a fascinating parka pretty similar to the Therme, and it doesn't come with a two way zipper.

Patagonia Vosque vs Tres Parka

Last updated: July 30, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

Patagonia Tres.

So I was wondering about this and couldn't really find any info online. So I ended up contacting Patagonia's Customer Service (see full chat text below).

In summary; if you want to maximize warmth and weather protection; then Tres is probably your best bet - since it's very, very warm (equipped with a whooping 150 grams of down). Otherwise, I'd recommend you to base your decision on their looks above all else.

Speaking of which - Tres look prettier to most.

I'd say, generally speaking, when it's dry out, with only a long sleeved shirt under and without a shell on top, with a mild wind and a very low to no activity level...

The approximate lowest temperatures an average person can wear these jackets without feeling cold can be listed as around 5 deg F (-15 deg C) for Tres and around 10 deg F (-12 deg C) for Vosque.

If you think you run hotter or colder than the average person, then shift these temperatures ranges accordingly.

Here's my chat with the awesome Patagonia Rep Alex

Alex (08.01.2020 17:09:54): Hello Canberk! My name is Alex. How may I help you today?

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:10:46): Hi Alex!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:10:51): Hey there!

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:10:53): I'm gathering information for a wide range of possible buyers of Women's Vosque and Tres Parkas (all for possibly different types of purposes), so I'd appreciate if you could share their technical & practical differences with me, as well as their most suitable intended uses. What are the advantages & disadvantages of one over the other?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:11:13): Sure, let me pull them up.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:11:17): How do they compare in terms of warmth, breathability, durability, weather resistance and bagginess/fit?

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:11:19): Thank you!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:11:23): Of course!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:12:54): So the Tres Parka will be warmer and will weigh a little more. The outer shell on the Vosque is a little more durable, but not by much.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:13:03): Both are waterproof.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:13:32): Alright

Alex (08.01.2020 17:13:38): The Tres Parka uses Down Insulation while the Vosque uses Synthetic Insulation too.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:14:05): Down won't stay warm if it soaks through if you're wearing just the inner layer on its own, synthetic will.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:14:51): But both inner layers are water resistant - so they'll repel light rain/snow for around an hour or two, or heavy rain/snow for about 5-10 minutes.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:15:20): That's basically all the major differences there!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:16:03): Did you have any other questions about these at all?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:16:23): Or about anything else?

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:16:46): Thank you so much Alex!

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:16:52): These are very, very helpful

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:16:56): How warmer is the Tres than the Vosque?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:16:58): You got it!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:17:16): It's noticeably warmer. Where do you live?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:17:21): Or where will these be used?

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:18:15): Ah I'm not looking to get them just for myself or a specific type of user

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:18:26): It's more for a wider range of buyers

Alex (08.01.2020 17:18:28): The Vosque will be more versatile then.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:18:32): Since it's less warm.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:19:03): You'll have a greater temperature range that you can wear it in, and if someone is in a colder part of the world, they can layer a light fleece under it in the winter.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:19:19): Then it'll be a Spring/Winter/Fall coat.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:19:37): How many grams of down does the Tres have?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:19:39): The Tres is more ideal for just winter, it's a bit warm for Spring and Fall in a lot of places.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:19:41): Let me see.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:19:48): Thank you!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:19:52): Sure thing!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:20:35): 150 grams

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:20:56): And it isn't equipped with any synthetic insulation, right?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:21:02): Not on the Tres, no.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:21:23): What about the amount of down in Vosque?

Alex (08.01.2020 17:21:35): It doesn't have Down, it uses synthetic insulation.

Alex (08.01.2020 17:21:38): Let me see how much.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:21:56): OK, I'm waiting, thank you!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:22:30): You got it!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:24:38): So synthetic insulation isn't measured by overall weight, it's measured by how much a 1 meter by 1 meter piece of the insulation weighs. In the Vosque, it uses 100 grams of synthetic insulation.

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:25:03): I see

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:25:11): I guess that's it, then

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:25:16): Thanks a lot Alex!

Canberk (08.01.2020 17:25:19): Have a great day

Alex (08.01.2020 17:25:22): You got it Canberk!

Alex (08.01.2020 17:25:32): You too! Let us know if you have any more questions come up!

Arc’teryx Centrale vs Patera

Last updated: November 9, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

Centrale and Patera are Arc'teryx's first and second warmest parkas. They're both designed for walking around town when it's freezing out (line 24). They're NOT for high output activities.

  • Must see before making up your final decision: Centrale vs Patera (revised 2020 version) comparison table at Arc'teryx's own site

Before even we get to their comparison in terms of technical performances, probably the most important thing you should know is that the Patera comes with a chronic zipper issue.

  • Patera has seen a revision in Jul 2020...

The updates:

  • Updated style lines for a slightly more relaxed, straighter fit,
  • Incorporation of a two-way WaterTightâ„¢ Vislon zipper with a snap placket,
  • And utilizing synthetic insulation in the hood and neck gasket.

Patera.

The problem is that it doesn't slide as smooth as you'd like. It gets stuck half way down, and honestly becomes really annoying after a certain point.

Arc'teryx DID address to this matter with a revision - although they seemingly failed. Some users continue complaining about it.

This might not be a deal-breaker for some of you but it certainly is something to consider. Worst case scenario you return the unused parka (don't forget to double check the return policy of the seller though).

Warmth

Both the Centrale and Patera are equipped with 750 fill power European goose down. This is top-notch quality - meaning that it offers very high warmth to weight ratio and will last decades without losing its insulating power.

The amount as to how much both parkas are equipped with this down, on the other hand, differs (which is an equally important factor that determines the ultimate warmth achieved in practice):

  • Patera (2019-2020 model) only has 59 grams of down.
  • Centrale (2019-2020 model), on the other hand, comes with a whooping 157 GRAMS OF DOWN - and hence is substantially warmer than the Patera.

Here's the source:

The specs of Centrale specifies 176 grams and not 157 grams - but my guess is that it's due to the size differences. Either way, the difference is ENORMOUS, and the Centrale will come much warmer than the Patera.

In addition to down, they're also equipped with synthetic insulation in strategic locations (NOT throughout the entire jacket) in order to compensate the downsides of down insulation (poor wet weather performance & relatively fragile face fabric - read more about it here in this post of mine).

I'd say, generally speaking, when it's dry out, with only a long sleeved shirt under and without a shell on top, with a mild wind and a very low to no activity level...

Centrale.

The approximate lowest temperatures an average person can wear these jackets without feeling cold can be listed as:

5 deg F (-15 deg C) for Patera and -5 deg F (-20 deg C) for Centrale.

If you think you run warmer or colder than the average person, mentally shift these temperatures accordingly.

In other words, Patera would just be enough for Boston winters. Anything colder than that and I'd recommend the Centrale.

Other than warmth, Centrale is also superior to Patera in the durability department since it's equipped with a higher amount of down and hence lasts for decades.

In terms of weather resistance they perform the same. They're water resistant (DWR coated), although not waterproof.

Cut and Fit

Centrale is puffier outwards and also offers a baggier cut than the Patera.

Check out Arc'teryx's sizing chart for women here.

Arc’teryx Thorsen vs Therme vs Camosun

Last updated: October 26, 2022 by Canberk Koksal

Before comparing Thorsen, Therme and Camosun; note that Thorsen (Men's) and Camosun (Men's) remain discontinued in FW23.

The Therme line, on the other hand, is expanded and now contains 3 products: Therme SV Parka (Men's), Therme Parka (Men's) and Therme Insulated Jacket (Men's).

These updates also make the Therme SV Parka the warmest Arc'teryx parka of all time, superseding the Thorsen Parka, which is slightly less warm than Therme SV.

So if you're not interested in getting one of the discontinued products, and would like to get one of the Therme's instead, then stop reading this post and visit this article: https://outdoorcrunch.com/arcteryx-therme-review/. Also make sure to take a look at Therme SV Parka vs Therme Parka vs Therme Insulated Jacket page at arcteryx.com.

Also try out Arc'teryx's Jacket Finder tool.

All these jackets are designed for walking around town when it's freezing out (so called "line 24").

In summary, if the subject temperature range is mostly going to be somewhere between 0 - 30 deg F (-18 - 0 deg C), then both Therme and Camosun would be warm enough. Maybe also consider getting a good Arc'teryx base layer such as this one for more inclement days.

You'd probably overheat inside the Therme SV and Thorsen at these temperature ranges. So I'd consider them for lower ranges - around 15 deg F (-10 deg C) and below.

Check out their temperature ratings below.

Therme Insulated Jacket isn't a parka, so I'm not going to review it in this post. Let me say this one thing about it, though: I can't think of any scenario where a Therme Insulated Jacket would be my primary recommendation. Because there are tons of much better Arc'teryx jackets at that warmth level - which is a very, very low level. No down and only 40 gsm of Coreloft insulation...

Thorsen (Men's - see image) and Therme SV (Men's - read review) is extremely warm - meaning that it can even be too warm in some (many?) situations.

All of these jackets use the same 750 fill power European goose down, which is pretty high quality. 750 - 900 FP is usually considered the highest quality of down.

  • Read more about this in here: https://outdoorcrunch.com/jackets/

However, although the quality of down is the same between these jackets, the amount of it varies. And amount is just as important as the quality.

Check out the chart below for more information on this. Simply pick "Parkas" in the "Type" filter dropdown menu.

  • Pre-2020 Therme Parka doesn't have a two way zipper

Also the hood and neck gasket weren't insulated.

Just letting you know.

So what should you consider when getting either one of these jackets?

If the lowest temperature you'll face won't be much colder than 15 deg F (-10 deg C)

In other words, if you'll be in Milwaukee, Toronto, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Boston, NYC, or any other similar temperature range city; then both Therme and Camosun would feel warm enough for around 90% of the winter.

For the remainder of the winter, you can easily use another simple fleece underneath either of these jackets. And I don't mean something high-quality like Arc'teryx either, even a t-shirt + hoody combo would work.

Therme vs Camosun: Warmth

The difference is minimal, but not non-existent. If you feel fairly cold inside a Camosun, I'd doubt Therme would solve your warmth problems in the same setting. But still, there are things you'd better consider.

I put together the things you should consider regarding the warmth differences between these two jackets under 3 main subheadings.

1-Easier layering

Compared to Therme, the Camosun is going to be more restrictive when you're trying to layer due to its trimmer fit. It might feel less comfortable if you try layering with a bulky synthetic insulated jacket beneath, such as Atom AR (Men's - read review).

2-More down

Part of the extra down in Therme (120 vs 105 grams) you see in the product specs results from Therme's 1.5 inch longer hemline. It naturally requires more down. It'll cover a larger portion of your hips - which can be especially important if you don't have or aren't planning to get insulated pants.

Also, even when you ignore the Therme's extra hem length, it still uses a little bit more down than the Camosun - hence a bit more warmth.

3- Traps more air

Baggier cut doesn't necessarily mean that it'll provide more insulation than a more snug cut in every situation. It's contextual and depends on many factors such as how baggy or snug the jackets are, their fill quality (fill power), lengths etc.

But in our case, Therme isn't too baggy to let the air circulate too much and hence let the cold air in. It doesn't use a lower quality fill either.

So, since more insulation is always achieved by trapping more "heated" air, in the end, Therme provides a bit more warmth.

As you see, the warmth difference is there, but it isn't as big to make you pretty much ignore other stuff. I'd pay at least as much attention to style, hood and personal layering needs.

I'd recommend you to check out my Therme Parka review as well.

Therme vs Camosun: Weather Resistance

With the FW23 update, Camosun is now equipped with more synthetic insulation, which in the end provides more weather resistance.

Not only does it provide more weather resistance, but it also provides more warmth under foul weather. Another thing you might want to take into consideration.

Also; Thorsen offers a 90D, Therme Parka a 75D and Camosun a whooping 150D outer shell fabric.

This means that the Camosun will feel burliest and Therme the smoothest in your hands. But most importantly, all of them are very durable and abrasion resistant, with the Camosun being the highest in this regard. It might (will), however, come overkill for most of us average users.

Its whooping 150 denier face fabric is also extremely robust and one of the thickest parka shells out there. It's comically strong. If you're unaware of deniers, 150 denier is something like you would double check when you see it somewhere because you think that you must have misread something. It's that unusual.

This, however, does have its downsides; with the most important one being the noise the Camosun makes because of its burly face fabric. Dealbreaker for some people.

Lastly, all these jackets are DWR coated - which means that they repel water just fine.

Therme vs Camosun: Style

If you're fit or thin, Camosun's trimmer cut might look better on you.

Baggier cut of Therme benefits you in warmth, as I explained earlier in this post, and this is how the baggier cut looks:

Proceed at your own taste...

Therme vs Camosun: Hood and collar configurations

Camosun's hood is detachable (separate hood) and that of Therme's isn't (integrated hood). This difference in hood construction naturally causes their collar configurations to differ as well.

Camosun offers DropHood and Therme offers StormHood. The former is considered the most comfortable when the hood is down, and the latter is more comfortable when the hood is up. Only you can decide which one you like. Read more about DropHood vs StormHood in this article: https://outdoorcrunch.com/stormhood-vs-drophood/

Notice how the collar of Camosun is separate from the hood.

Camosun's collar is always up, whereas for the Therme the hood should be in use for collar to be standing up straight.

Higher collar is typically expected to block more wind, and I'm not saying this is incorrect. But even when the Therme's hood isn't in use (e.g collar isn't standing), you can still zip it upwards and raise it to a position that's as high as that of the Camosun's:

Still, in the end, it won't feel as comfortable as the Camosun's collar. This is why they're both equally great in terms of blocking wind when the hood isn't in use, but Camosun is more comfortable.

On the other hand, when you need more wind protection, Therme's collar will reach up higher when the hood is in use.

Two way zipper

Camosun doesn't offer a two way front main zipper. This can something to think about if you're planning to drive with your coat on, since a two way zipper helps a lot in that case.

Thorsen Parka, Therme SV Parka and Therme Parka all offer a two way zipper, by the way. It also helps with breathability. Its only downside is that it tends to break down more easily than one way zippers.

Length

Camosun is a bit shorter than Therme, much shorter than Therme SV and Thorsen. I believe the length to be one of the primary parameters of the feeling of warmth, so this is a minus for the Camosun's warmth.

Now enter my friends Therme SV and Thorsen - and let's get to their reviews.

It's important to note that both of these parkas would probably come too warm for the above temperature range and setup. Vast majority of people would likely overheat in it (unless they run quite cold). Because it's designed for freezing temperatures.

...so if you'll be facing a considerable amount of colder days

Say, if you'll be facing as low as -5 deg F (-20 deg C) and below, then I'd recommend getting either:

  1. Therme or Camosun (but probably Therme - read below paragraph) AND a good fleece under (such as this one of Arc'teryx) for extra layering (Therme and Camosun alone probably wouldn't be enough to keep you very warm at this cold),
  2. The Therme SV or Thorsen (this color is really liked by many - including me).

If you choose to go with option #1, again, it's good to note that Camosun is going to be more restrictive in this situation due to its trimmer fit. I'd probably get the Therme and reap the extra warmth benefits as well.

Although the temperature differences between the Therme and Camosun are minimal, this isn't the case for Therme SV and Thorsen. It's significantly warmer than both of these jackets.

For the vast majority of people, even if you layer Therme or Camosun with another synthetic insulated jacket (such as one of these) they still won't feel as warm as Therme SV or Thorsen all by themselves!

In short, if you want to maximize warmth; then Therme SV or Thorsen is the way to go for you.

But if you have more $$$ to spare, then layering would give you more versatility. Proceed with your personal needs and desires.
